Came up again on the XeTeX mailing list. A work-around was proposed.

In XeLaTeX at least, there are settings FakeSlant or AutoFakeSlant which implement an oblique:

\newfontfamily\skt[Script=Devanagari,Language=Sanskrit,FakeSlant=0.095]{FreeSerif}
