In Debian bugs 654541 and 654542 Josh Triplett has asked to mention "basename" and "dirname" in the documention for the %f and %h printf directives:

Please consider using the standard term "dirname" in this description, to make it easier to find.

Any thoughts on this? I am no native speaker, but using these two words in regular English text looks ugly to me. OTOH find /usr/share/man/man? -type f -exec zgrep -l basename {} + has lots of hits in other documentation.
