I have now tried many combinations of sshfs/fuse options (including -oreaddir_ino) none of which seem to stop screen giving the "Permission denied" error.

I know this report is old but...
Have you tried -oreaddir_ino sshfs option for mounting ?
It allows to know the current dir, for instance pwd is not working without this option, maybe chdir command in screen relies on this...

I have some directories that are mounted via sshfs which I have set my .screenrc

eg chdir /home/me/remote/project

where /home/me/remote is mounted with sshfs

when I run screen it show a message in the status bar

/home/me/remote/project: Permission denied

I can change to that directory before I run screen and once I am in screen.

Any ideas on why this may be?

Ivan
