When booting grub from a machine without serial hardware, enabling serial terminal makes console terminal print so slowly that it takes 5 minutes to display the initial menu.

This is reproducible in qemu following these steps:

mkdir -p overlay/boot/grub/

echo "serial; terminal_output --append serial" > overlay/boot/grub/grub.cfg

grub-mkrescue -o serial_timeout.img overlay

qemu serial_timeout.img -serial none
