I've confirmed this is the result of FLTK not working properly for Mac OSX.

This may be a MacOS X only problem.

I'll take a close look tomorrow and report back.

I noticed the position property for the fltk backend isn't implemented correctly.

try

backend fltk
figure (1)
plot (1:10)
set (gca, "position", [0 0 1 1])

This should cause the plot to axis plot box to fill the figure window. However, it does not. The x-axis ticklabels are still visible.

I've attached an example of what I see.
