[field #13]                  Summary: Return column number of first match as option to grep
[field #14]      Original Submission: Hello,
It might be a nice to have an option to return the column number of the line that first matchs the regexp from grep.  I know this can be done with other commands but seems to be very closly related to returning the line number (I saw the request on google) .  My motivation is the same as the original posters there, to have emacs more easily jump to matches.  Just my 2cents.  I don't mean to offend anyone.

Thanks,

John Weatherwax

Hi John.

Can you check whether the current CVS version of Emacs' grep.el   <http://savannah.g ... progmodes/grep.el> already does what you want?  Its elisp code for grep-highlight-matches and grep-regexp-alist is already able to pick up on GNU grep's --color markers to zero in on matches.  In case the latest grep.el doesn't already jump to matches, can it be modified to do so using these abilities it already has, without requiring anything new from GNU grep?
