I am not, BTW, suggesting that we have to implement all of these features before introducing one of them. Just suggesting this should be a "style" settable in the Mode menu, rather than some user preference. It can start out by just placing surplus duration into the next measure (i.e. auto-tie) and be extended to other features that fit in with the general idea of keeping measures the right length.

This "style" could also affect changing the duration of a note to a shorter value. For example, in edit mode if you change a quarter note to an eighth note it could replace the quarter note with two eighth notes. And likewise if making a note longer it could swallow up notes on the same step of the scale that follow, so preserving the correct amount of beats in the measure.
This sort of thing would be particularly useful in vocal work where each note represents a syllable, and changing the words requires dividing the note up. Composers also may have the basic structure there but want to edit within the measure, keeping the overall beats in the measure fixed.
I've called this a "style" to distinguish it from the modes (Edit and Insert mode etc). I think we can think of the Audible Feedback option as a "style" as well (all these are in the Mode menu).
So this "style" of entry would be one that tries to keep the number of beats in the measure correct by adjusting things as you make changes.
Any suggestions for a good name for this "style"?
"Constant Bar Length" (or is that "Constant Measure Length" in American?) or
"Consistent Bar Lenth"
or
"Even Measures"
(short, but perhaps misleading, you can switch timesigs...)
or....

Auto-Tie would calculate the amount of time left in the current measure. If a note entry occurs and if the note_duration > leftover. A note is added to current measure that is (note_duration - leftover) in length. It is tied to the following note of length (note_duration - (note_duration - leftover)) in Next_Measure.

This feature can be turned off or on in the preferences. This would aid in cleaning up the importmidi.c code and provide a way to facilitate script that do things like augmentation/diminution. It also would ease rhythmic entry if the note duration did not neatly fit in the measure.
