Hmm... I don't think that's a good idea -- one reason is that it assumes the user is allowed to do sudo. How about emitting a BELL when write permission is lacking (in addition to the warning in the status bar)? And meanwhile, it's easy enough to work your way around it: save the file as for example ./oops and after exiting nano sudo cp oops to destination.

If I had $1 for every time I manage to forget to "sudo" before trying to edit a file as root, and then get into trouble when I try to save the file, I'd be a wealth (and far less stressed) person).

When nano generates the message: "Error saving file, permission denied", could we possibly have the option to prompt to enter the relevant (usually root) password?
