How about emitting a BELL when write permission is lacking (in addition to the warning in the status bar)? And meanwhile, it's easy enough to work your way around it: save the file as for example ./oops and after exiting nano sudo cp oops to destination. |

If I had $1 for every time I manage to forget to "sudo" before trying to edit a file as root, and then get into trouble when I try to save the file, I'd be a wealth (and far less stressed) person).

Well, it is not nano's business to handle permissions. But... it can do much, much better at warning the user about unwritableness of the file -- better than just putting up an almost unnoticeable message tagged onto the "lines read" one. See bug #42383.
