Thanks for your report! Fixed in the latest release, 2.6.10.

According to CLHS, READ-BASE should only affect integers and rationals, not floats.
But in GCL 2.6.7 on Linux, I see this:

(setq read-base 2.)
(type-of (read-from-string "1d0"))
=> SYMBOL

With GCL 2.6.8pre on Windows XP, I get LONG-FLOAT. However someone else reported an incorrect result (apparently SYMBOL) on Windows XP with the version reported as 2.6.8.
