Hi,

ext4 uses extents by default which are incompatible to the inode format used before in ext2/3
grub2 does support the ext4 extents, so you have to switch to a recent grub2 if you want to have your /boot on an ext4 filesystem.

Ok,first,
The grub I used was the one from Mandriva 2008 CD Spring edition.
I don't know the exact ver.

Second, after installing Mandriva on an EXT4 formatted partition, and rebooting, the grub gave me 'Error 2',about on any pc I want to boot this Os.

It seems the journaling filesystem EXT4 is still in beta testing,so it's only expected that some or another error like this could happen.

I suggest the bug to be fixed together with the guys creating the ext4 filesystem, since it still doesn't have a final version out.

I've done recent tests with the ext4 file system (with noatime on) and the performance of OS installation, boot time, file write/read/create is way better on SD cards and MLC Flash drives like usb sticks then ext4, JFS, and XFS,even then ReiserFS.

See here:

I believe with mini notebooks, and umpc devices coming up with all kinds of flash drives, and external SD cards, that the ext4 file format very soon will become a standard side to side to ext3; and probably replacing the old ext2 file system.

Anyway, that was a bit off of the topic, but just meant to illustrate that there are already some people interested in this newer file system. We hope that very soon the Grub provided with our linux distribution of choice, will be able to support that too (of course).

thanks.
