The 'good' thing in that case is, we can change the escape for the debug util (ie. 'T' in this case) to something else, without breaking backward compatibility.

I don't think so... if we really wanted it for user-visible escapes, then we'd be depriving the developers of those escapes; not very consistent.

For escapes primary useful for development, should these be wrapped around '#ifdef DEBUG', 'just in case' these can be used for some general user-visible setting?
