I agree with. This change will make sense. I'll start makeing this change with implementing more flexible directory structure (bug #22008).

the project file should be split up in two files in a bundle, like ProjectBuilder does. In one file all the generic project information is kept, while the other is user specific. The latter can be omitted from a version control system.
This would avoid a lot of useless project conflicts at just an edit 9like the date of last edit, open files, window sizes, etc etc)
