A first fat image to work on -- ``Store is smaller then implied by metadata'' -- has been installed into `flubber:~tschwinge/tmp/fat-images/': `a.img'.  Linux can mount that one without complaining.

This was a bug in QEMU, see <http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2007-03/msg00701.html>.

This doesn't mean, however, that the (dynamically linked) fatfs translator would be in a working state now...

QEMU can -- on the fly -- create a virtual fat block device based on a directory hierarchy on the host system.  (For example: ``-hdc fat:some/where''.)

The Hurd's fatfs translator, however, can't cope with that block device.  It may be that it's simply too strict when checking the device for validity; it might also be that QEMU's emulation is not completely done according to the specification.

As GNU GRUB and other operating systems (I guess) are able to handle these block device, I suppose that it's a (probably minor) issue in our fatfs implementation.
