We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Please can you check if this bug still applies there, and if it does, reopen it?

Btw, you can use the "grub-mkrescue" command to generate ISO images for testing.

Thanks

Eltorito-based Grub CD tests on Gentoo showed all current Grub versions, from 0.96-r1 through 0.97-r2, give error 25 when selecting from the distros displayed on the Gentoo splash screen.

Similar tests on Slax 5.1.4 gave error 25 with Grub version 0.97, a module converted from Slackware grub-0.97-i486-2.tgz.

However, Kanotix 'Easter Edition', which uses grub-0.97.7.1 (Debian) produced Grub CDs which worked perfectly.

To see if the Gentoo errors were RAM involved I recompiled without himem, effectively limiting RAM to 800+ MB. Re-emerged grub, but nothing helped.

Finally I copied both stage2_eltorito files which worked to Gentoo, and made Grub CDs which worked perfectly.

The 'good' files were:
Slax grub module version 0.95
Kanotix  grub version 0.97.7.1

NB! In case its relevant - at the same time as adding RAM, I swapped my 160GB 2nd hard drive with a 320GB replacement.

This is supposedly fixed on:
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=14407

Check the patch:
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/download.php?file_id=2508

I have also a better patch for this (I believe) in my own patched grub (you can dig into source code of Super Grub Disk (dev_grub folder)

http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/

for it. I will try to make a patch for 0.97 version and send it here... But as far as I can forget it... do not hesitate to send me a reminder email adrian15 @ raulete . net

Sorry, take back that last comment. I just burnt a new Grub CD on the latest version of Slax, 5.1.4 and was amazed when it booted OK. Slax is using version 0.95, and I see now that Gentoo doesn't have that version in portage!

I'll get back with more info asap.

I have been chasing this problem for a day on my Grub CD, after upgrading from 768MB to 1.5GB RAM.

I have tried versions 0.95 up to 0.97-r2 built on Gentoo, and am convinced it is related to the RAM increase.. my Grub floppy fallback with the same menu.lst works with no problem.

For the time being I have no plans on pulling the box apart to prove the point..

Having the exact same problem with Debian unstable's latest (as of today) grub (GNU GRUB 0.97).

I am not trying to boot from CD, but from disk, my setup is very regular.   Manually entering the EXACT SAME command simply works.

Please try to resolve this ASAP, it's quite critical.

Hi,  New to Linux so please bare with me.  Have read the Grub manual and experimented for hours (in fact, days) but cannot get past the following when trying to boot from a CD created exactly as per the manual,  using Grub 0.95:

  Booting command-list
  error 25: disk read error
  Press any key to continue

Pressing a key takes me to the menu where I can see the entries I expect.  Have checked the entries using the edit functions and they are correct.  The menu has the splash image from the HD.

If I drop into a command line and type exactly the same commands the system will boot perfectly - into both FC4 and XP.

In grub I can also read the HD with:  'cat (hd0,14)/boot/grub/grub.conf'  and I get the correct result.

So it seems that there is no problem  reading the HD.

Grub is installed into the linux partition and I'm booting using NTLOADER and grub.bin - this works perfectly using the same grub.conf file.  This is only a temporary stage so I need the boot CD to work so I can move on.

This looks like a Grub bug to me although I could well be missing the obvious, all the info I can think of and requested in the manual is below.  Thanks for any help.

CD contains:

  /boot.catalog
  /boot/grub/stage2_eltorito
  /boot/grub/grub.conf
  /boot/grub/menu.lst
  /boot/grub/device.map

grub.conf & menu.lst both contain:

  default=0
  timeout=5
  splashimage=(hd0,14)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
  hiddenmenu
  title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4)
root (hd0,14)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz... ro root=LABEL=LINUX rhgb
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.img
  title Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

(The above "root=LABEL=LINUX" was created during FC4 installation. 'LINUX' was the name I entered during partition creation with Partition Magic.)

Device.map:

  (fd0) /dev/fd0
  (hd0) /dev/sda
  (hd1) /dev/sdb

fdisk -l gives:

[root@localhost ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
